The full scorecard is the most informative single document in cricket, but it is also one of the easiest to misread. The desk uses a consistent sequence when looking at a finished match, and the sequence matters more than any individual stat.
The powerplay, first
The first six overs tell you the conditions. A high-scoring powerplay (60+) means the pitch is flat and the boundaries are short. A low-scoring powerplay (35-) means the pitch is sticky or the bowling is excellent. The rest of the innings has to be read in the context of what the powerplay said.
The middle overs, second
Overs 7–16 tell you the game state. A middle-overs collapse (3 wickets for 25 runs) is the most decisive passage in most T20 innings — the team that wins the middle overs wins the match about 70% of the time. The scorecard shows the middle-overs run rate and the wickets; the desk reads the trajectory, not just the totals.
The death overs, third
The death overs (17–20) are the most variable phase. A 50-run death over haul is not a sign of dominance; it is a sign that the fielding captain got the matchup wrong. The scorecard tells you the totals; the over-by-over commentary (or the death-overs economy column on the player page) tells you why.
The dots, always
Dot balls are the most under-weighted number on a scorecard. A team scoring 180/5 with 25 dot balls is in worse shape than a team scoring 165/6 with 12 dot balls. The first team needed boundaries; the second team kept the scoreboard moving. The fantasy desk reads dot percentage as a leading indicator.
