The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed in a circular to all ten franchises on Monday that the 2027 auction purse will be increased to ₹146 crore per franchise, up from the ₹120 crore ceiling for the 2026 cycle.

Retention rules

Alongside the purse increase, the BCCI has confirmed a revised retention cap: franchises may retain up to five players from their 2026 squad ahead of the 2027 auction, with the Right To Match (RTM) card remaining in place for the auction itself.

What it means for the league

The purse increase is the largest single-cycle adjustment in the league’s history. Combined with the revised retention cap, the move is widely expected to push 2027 auction prices for marquee players into territory that would have been unthinkable three years ago — with several franchises already signalling an appetite for marquee rebuilds rather than incremental adjustments.

What to watch

Detailed retention rules — including the cost of each retained slot and the impact on the remaining purse — are expected in a follow-up circular later this week. The full 2027 window is currently scheduled for 22 March to 28 May 2027.
